This design is specifically intended for small living rooms, but it can adapt for other rooms without a problem. So, read on and add a little glam to your living room. Just because a room is small doesn’t mean it shouldn’t rock.
1. Affordable Small Living Room Design Walls
Make the Walls Interesting
For small spaces, it’s important to keep the walls light, but that doesn’t mean void of character. What I love about peel and stick wallpaper is A: It’s budget friendly and B: easy to install and remove.
2. Affordable Small Living Room Design Furniture
Furniture is Properly Scaled
It can be difficult to determine how a piece of furniture will fit in a room. Whether the room is large or small, furniture needs to be properly sized for the area. In a small room, large furniture will look cramped. Remember, furniture shouldn’t always be flush against walls. An angled chair or sofa pulled away from a wall encourages the room to breathe.
A little trick when buying furniture for a small room: expose your legs. Well, not your legs, but the legs of the furniture. You know how guys dig skirts typically above the knee because they reveal a little more and add va-va-va-voom? Same is true with furniture in a small room!
This loveseat is small but stylish and comfortable. The swooped arms are not over-powering, lines are clean, and the tufting on the back adds style. The arm chair is multifunctional. It’s not only additional stylish seating but pull it up to the console table and it’s also a desk chair…brilliant!
3. Affordable Small Living Room Design Multi-Purpose Furniture
Use dual purpose tables
Part of designing a smart and affordable small living room is making wise choices when it comes to furniture. Just as the chair is used in different applications, tables are valuable real estate, so it’s vital to make the best use of them.
As a magazine junkie, this versatile coffee table would work perfectly for hiding my treasure trove of quick reads. I also think it would be a fabulous location to store a laptop. The top lifts up allowing two people to work on their computers, kids can do homework or draw and honestly, it could work if you eat in your living room. It’s super multi-functional.
The stylish console table also offers serious bang for the buck. Use it as a tv stand, desk or clear it all off while entertaining and it becomes a server or little bar.
4. Affordable Small Living Room Design with Shine
Shimmer and Shine with Impact
Beautiful reflective surfaces elevate the style of an affordable small living room. A little sheen adds an abundance of interest without creating chaos in a room. Rather than taking up valuable flat surface space with table lamps, consider hanging mercury glass pendants from the ceiling. This unexpected touch will make an impact. The floor lamp has a bit of shimmer, but the open globe base keeps the lamp airy and open.
A guaranteed way to make a small living room appear larger to hang a fabulous mirror. Ideally, place the mirror across from the window. But, window or not, adding a mirror will create reflection, bounce light, and the room is going to feel quite a bit larger. Even the proposed tables have metal bases for added shimmer and style.
5. Affordable Small Living Room Design with Color Palette
Keep Color Palette Cohesive
When creating an affordable small living room, it’s crucial to be aware of how many colors you bring in. Use whatever accent color you love but pick one or two and then vary the depth or tone. For this design, I opted for gray and plum as my color palette. The tone of the colors change giving a variety of light, dark and medium, but the color palette is the same.
You can see that the colors in the chair are repeated in the upholstered pouf, area rug and throw pillows. The visual interest comes by using a variety of color tones. The room would not have nearly the same impact if all the colors were the same.
Design tip: If the room is adjacent to another room, use the same formula of varied color depth and make sure the color palette is complementary. It need not match perfectly but it will look best if everything coordinates.
Everything in this mood board for an affordable small living room came straight from Target. Nothing fancy schmancy. Even if there isn’t a Target near you, it’s all available for delivery! By using the right scale of furniture, keeping the color palette simple and focusing on the details that open up a small room, this plan looks high-end. An expensive piece of furniture doesn’t guarantee beauty just as an inexpensive item doesn’t mean it will appear cheap.
